Where CBMC began...
CBMC (Connecting Businessmen to Christ) traces its beginning to
1930, when a group of Chicago Christian businessmen met to coordinate
a series of pre-Easter rallies. With the Great Depression in its
second year, these men saw a need for a spiritual revival in the
Chicago area, and a six week evangelistic crusade was held at the
Garrick Theatre, located in downtown Chicago. Public response, from
the first meeting on January 6, 1931, was overwhelming. Although
the theater seated more that 800, crowds of those seeking to attend
always exceeded the capacity. That was the first indication that
God had greater plans for CBMC than its small group of founders had
envisioned.
The noon, Monday through Friday, meetings soon were extended beyond
the scheduled six weeks into six months, then one year. Eventually
the six weeks grew into 26 years as they continued uninterrupted
until 1956.
As the years passed, CBMC work spread throughout the world, into
such countries as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, England, --in all
30 countries. This growth underlined the universal truth that men
of all nationalities and cultures have an equal need for a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ.
The year 1970 saw birth of Operation Timothy, a unique program of
Bible study designed primarily for one-to-one discipleship. Through
the succeeding years, this program has become a vital tool for helping
men(and women) along the path to spiritual maturity and equipping
them to share their faith and to disciple others.
Today, CBMC has grown form a small group of men in Chicago to 500
communities across the United States, and acrosss the world in over
30 countries on six continents. The methods have changed, but CBMC's
two-fold purpose remains the same:
TO EVANGELIZE AND DISCIPLE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL MEN FOR CHRIST
